What We Do

The BEF is a foundation that practices relationship philanthropy, meaning that we establish personal relationships between the grantor (the BEF) and the grantee (the BEF scholars).

The BEF provides financial assistance and intensive mentoring to enable students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve academic success at a competitive 4-year college or university. Mentoring continues beyond graduation to assist our graduates in launching successful careers in many fields.

What sets the BEF apart from other educational foundations is the intensive mentoring given to our scholars. The BEF differs from many other foundations by focusing on only one to three students per year, in order to provide both dedicated mentoring and the ability to graduate from college with little or no debt. This focused mentoring is necessary for achieving our high graduation rate. Graduating with little or no debt greatly expands the prospects for these students to pursue advanced degrees or other career-building opportunities. This success doesn’t just help the individual, it helps a whole generation, it helps a whole family, and it helps a whole society. We believe in the power of this ripple effect and the concept of paying it forward.

Our scholars have achieved a 90%+ college graduation rate among a demographic that typically has only an 11% graduation rate, even with full financial support.
